     a political party promoting free enterprise and private ownership, in particular a major British party that since the Second World War has been in power 1951–64, 1970–4, 1979–97, and since 2010 (2010–15 in coalition with the Liberal Democrats). It emerged from the old Tory Party under Sir Robert Peel in the 1830s and 1840s.
