- (1810–65), English novelist; full name Mrs. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell. An active humanitarian from a Unitarian background, she wrote Mary Barton (1848), Cranford (1853), and North and South (1855), which display her interest in social concerns. She also wrote a biography (1857) of her friend Charlotte Brontë.
