      a landlocked republic in the Balkans; population 2,100,000 (estimated 2015); official language, Macedonian; capital, Skopje. Formerly a constituent republic of Yugoslavia, the country became independent as the Republic of Macedonia after a referendum in 1991. Following a dispute with Greece it changed its name to North Macedonia in 2019.
