- (1849–1914), US journalist and social reformer; born in Denmark. A police reporter for the New York Tribune 1877–88 and the New York Evening Sun 1888–99, he was a crusader for parks, playgrounds, and improved schools and housing in urban areas. He wrote How the Other Half Lives (1890).
